Island Sights with Lunch
Corfu the storm-tossed refuge of Odysseus is the
crown jewel of the Ionian Islands. Its Old Town is a charming blend of cafes and
shops tucked into the nooks and crannies of alleys and arcades. And its an
island of saints, heroes, and royalty.
Our Voyager Club morning begins with a visit to Paleokastritsa and its
13th-century Monastery of the Virgin Mary. The monastery was built on an
imposing outcropping of rock. Well walk through the small garden its views
are heavenly and beg to be photographed. Inside the Greek Orthodox church are
gorgeous icons, and the complexs small museum houses books as well as a
selection of extremely rare icons. The monastery is still inhabited by a
dedicated band of monks.
From the village of Lakones, the panorama is extraordinary. Well be able to
see Paleokastritsa and beyond the sapphire sea and craggy coastline that
enveloped Odysseus. Legend holds that his petrified ship is among the labyrinth
of boulders.
Well continue inland through picturesque villages Makrades, Vistonas,
Troumbeta Pass, and Scripero en route to our barbecue luncheon in Aghios
Giannai. A feast awaits at Spyros Vassilis Country Restaurant. It is one of the
islands most popular dining establishments. Lunch includes local specialties,
among them roasted lamb and flaky spinach pie. Regional wines complement our
meal and no dining occasion would be complete without ouzo. Well be regaled
with traditional Corfiote music during lunch.
Afterwards, well wander the streets of Old Town and its environs. The palace
of St. Michael and St. George is just lovely. And todays Town Hall was a
Venetian theater in the late 17th century. Well partake of refreshments in a
quaint caf. At the Achilleion Palace, named by Empress Elizabeth of Austria for
Achilles (this was her summer villa), a private tour will guide us through the
elegant rooms and coastal gardens.
