Exclusive Shore Event: Dubrovnik | City Sights and Festive Lunch
Croatia is one of Europe's most ancient states. In the 6th century the eponymous chieftain of the Croats, Chrovatos, migrated to the old Roman province of Illyricum, just south of the Danube. His followers managed to dwell separately from the prodigious Byzantine Empire for hundreds of years. Then in AD 924, King Tomaslave created an independent Roman Catholic realm. The walled city of Dubrovnik was a jewel in the king's crown.
Voyager Club members will revel in the beauty of this gem on the Adriatic's Dalmatian Coast. Dubrovnik has been a strategic crossroads for more than 900 years. Our day begins with a panoramic drive from the "new" city to the Old City. Chrovatos' legions founded the original city in the 7th century. Much of what we see today was completed by the 13th century and remained unchanged through the press of the Ottoman Empire and two World Wars until 1991, when the city sustained heavy damage during Croatia's war of independence with Yugoslavia. Dubrovnik has since been painstakingly "rebuilt" by local and global "hands," and remains a remarkable medieval treasure.
We enter the Old City from the West across the bridge guarded by Saint Blaise at the Pile Gate. The Stradun is the main thoroughfare we'll follow it as we walk to some of the city's most beloved sites with private guides: the 16th century monasteries of the Franciscan and Dominican Brothers; the majestic Rector's Palace, built in the 1400s; and the soaring Cathedral Treasury. At a local gallery, we'll spend some time with a renowned Croatian artist. Afterwards, you'll be able to explore and shop on your own before our fabulous luncheon.
Lunch will be served at one of the areas renowned establishments and will feature fresh local fare along with fine Croatian wines.
